LAYING IT ALL OUT
Even though you’re not beholden to the past, it’s good to know basic table-setting etiquette in order to mix the modern with the traditional. The simplest, most important rule is this: forks go on the left, knives to the immediate right of the plate (blades turned in, please), and spoons to the right of the knives. Although there’s a “traditional” spread of silverware for formal dinners, in reality, the meal you’re serving can dictate what you do and do not need on the table. (For example, if you’re not serving soup or chili, there’s no need for soup spoons.)
